Anu Garg BSEE, MScEE
Having spent much of my early life in technical education, rigors of academics left little time for introspection and self reflection. With a penchant for fine art and music from an early age, my interests drifted from electrical engineering rather quickly and moved towards art. I began with sketching , water colours and charcoal, and experienced immense satisfaction in my ability to explore and give expression to creativity. Following a course in representational art at the Academy of Realist Art in Toronto, Canada and better equipped with formal technique, I began doing portraits in charcoal, pastels and more recently chose to try landscapes in oils. An interest that essentially began as a hobby, turned into a passion in short order. To explore further, I needed my own source material which led me to photography, a vast subject in itself. The camera's ability to capture the play of light and shadows is alluring. My quest to delve deeper led to the need for better equipment. I now primarily photograph with the Leica M Range finder and Nikon DSLRs. I have chosen to pursue both art forms and hope to continue exploring creative expression.

Raised in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, Avi graduated with a Cum Laude Doctorate in Medicine from the University of Ottawa Medical School after attending two years of a four year Bachelor of Science program from Queens University at Kingston, Ontario. Following a comprehensive Surgical Internship from the University of Toronto he continued training in General Surgery to become a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. With a keen interest in cardiac surgery, he continued with further surgical training in Cardiothoracic surgery at the University of Western Ontario, London, Ontario. He received his second fellowship in Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery to become a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in Cardiothoracic Surgery. In addition, he completed a Fellowship in Cardiopulmonary Transplantation.
All the while, through years of arduous and grueling surgical training, he always loved his camera. Equipped with his Nikon F3 and a few rolls of film stashed in his pocket he would enjoy what little time he had behind the lens. Of course, through the years, technology quickly moved along and his beloved Nikon became a relic. He never did find the time to join the digital band wagon. Fast forward a few years and I came home with a digital camera ready to take on photography for myself. It rekindled his passion and he plunged right back in photography. His camera of choice now is his Leica M Rangefinder, although he will use my Nikon DSLRs on occasion.
In addition to his Canadian fellowships, Avi is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a Fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians. He is a Member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons and a Member of the Canadian Society of Cardiac Surgeons. He has been in cardiac surgical practice for over twenty years. Presently he is Chief of Cardiac Surgery at Health Sciences North, Sudbury.
Photography remains a passion for Avi. Whatever free time he can muster, we now go out on photography projects together and is something we envision ourselves doing together for years to come.
